Parent forum: July 2021

Dear parents,

Many thanks to the parents who attended yesterday’s parent forum to discuss home-school communication. The feedback we received was really helpful in order to strengthen these areas from September.

Information on what your child is learning

Termly curriculum maps and curriculum overviews (available on the school website) provide some information. From September we will be sharing science knowledge organisers for each unit (example on the attachment) along with unit overviews for English and maths. We will reintroduce Learning Journals so that current curriculum information is available in a paper format. The Learning Journals are folders which children can take between home and school containing information such as unit overviews for maths and English, reading lists, spelling lists etc. Parents suggested that Learning Journals could also be used as a means of communication between teacher and parent.

In September we are planning Meet the Teacher evenings to be specific to year groups. We plan for the focus of these sessions to be more on learning expectations than class routines.

Monday 13th September 6pm: Oak class (Reception)
Tuesday 14th September 6pm: Chestnut Y3
Tuesday 14th September 6.30pm: Chestnut Y4
Wednesday 15th September 6pm: Rowan Y5
Wednesday 15th September 6.30pm: Rowan Y6 (followed by Yenworthy meeting at 7pm)
Thursday 16th September 6pm: Willow Y1
Thursday 16th September 6.30pm: Willow Y2

Information on how well your child is learning

During the forum we had a really interesting discussion on this area. The consensus from parents was a request for information which was:

  • Timely (allowing enough time to support a child with a gap in learning for example)
  • Specific (learning targets identified with an indication of attainment against an expected outcome)
  • Helpful (resources suggested or provided by school to support parents to support a child at home)

I will work with class teachers to consider the best way to provide this information.

If you were unable to make yesterday’s meeting and have ideas on these areas please get in touch. I plan to host another parent forum on this issue near October half-term in order to obtain feedback on Learning Journals and other measures put in place during the first half-term of 2021-22.

Best wishes,
