Intent
From the action songs of the youngest children to the more complex music making of the older children, music has a vital part to play in children’s education. Our music curriculum aims to support children to develop a love of music through a range of experiences. Every child has the opportunity to experience and enjoy music through performance, composition, appreciation, participation and listening. They are encouraged to see music as an important form of communication in daily life and in different cultures, and to develop their own musical interests.
At Stonesfield School, music is lessons follow the Charanga Scheme of work. In addition, children have the opportunity to learn to play tuned instruments as well as take part in a number of musical events to raise the profile of music and give the children the chance to perform.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, children are taught to appraise different pieces of music, listening for parts they like, different instruments and rhythms. As part of this they listen to music from a wide variety of artists and genres. They learn to sing along with simple songs and move in time to the pulse.
Lower Key Stage 2
Across Year 3 and 4, the children begin to learn basic tuned instruments beginning with the glockenspiel. Years 3 and 4 also learn to play Djembe drums with a performance to parents in the Autumn Term. As well as this, Year 3 and 4 widen their appreciation of music with new genres and artists introduced.
Upper Key Stage 2
In Years 5 and 6 all children have the opportunity to learn the ukulele and practice their performance skills to parents. In addition, children continue to develop simple skills on the glockenspiel and use a range of percussion instruments to play with rhythm and pulse.
Stonesfield School also takes part in a number of musical events to raise the profile of music and give the children the chance to perform. We also hold an annual event at school called Musical Allsorts where all children are encouraged to take part in a performance.
The school also offers guitar lessons through our teacher, Mrs Fox, who visits the school weekly. Children in Key Stage 2 are able to pay for her tuition. Pupils in receipt of Free School Meals are able to access this free of charge.
